The Leah Jay Story

In 1994 Leah Jay commenced her property management business as a sole trader in Hamilton. Leah ventured into business for herself after heading the rentals team at one of the region’s most reputable real estate firms.

The situation with real estate in Newcastle, as far as rentals were concerned, was a very different picture to what it is today. Leah realised that, despite the best efforts of management, the interests of sales and rentals were often not the same; usually, sales would hold sway. This was the norm across real estate agencies in Newcastle, and indeed throughout the state and country. It became evident there was a need for a service dedicated to property management – a specialist service with superior levels of expertise and commitment, beyond the established ‘rentals departments’.

It was seen as a bold step at the time; Leah Jay was the first business in the country dedicated solely to property management. After operating in Beaumont Street for the first few years, the first stand-alone office was opened in Tudor Street, Hamilton in 1998. Two more offices were opened in late 2003 and early 2004 in Warners Bay and East Maitland. This was largely due to growing demand by investors looking further afield, as the inner Newcastle housing market grew more expensive. The East Maitland office was then demolished, with a purpose-built two-storey building replacing it in 2011.

In 2014 Leah Jay turned 20 and celebrated in a number of ways, including having some fun with our marketing. Leah Jay also sponsored the Newcastle Civic Theatre and invited a number of owners to the various shows across the year.

2015 was another excellent year for Leah Jay, with the team expanding to fifty. A new level of executive management was introduced to strengthen and support this growth. This included dedicated Marketing and HR Managers, and an Investment Services Manager focused on assisting clients’ efforts to maximise their investment and ongoing yield. An additional office was opened in Belmont to service owners and their properties in Lake Macquarie.

In 2017, our Warners Bay and Belmont branches were consolidated, with Belmont becoming our flagship Lake Macquarie office.
