In 1994 I began as a sole trader in Beaumont Street, Hamilton. It was both exciting and daunting at the same time, being the first person to focus on doing property management only. I ventured into business after heading up the ‘rentals’ team at one of the region’s most reputable real estate firms. The situation with real estate in Newcastle, as far as property management is concerned, was a different picture then to what it is today. I realised that landlords were not the priority that vendors were and whilst property management still tends to be the poor relation to sales in real estate offices, back then the gap in service was significantly greater. I saw a need for a business dedicated solely to property management, with superior levels of expertise and commitment, beyond the established ‘rentals departments’.
Today more than 50 people across three offices make up the Leah Jay team. The business has gone way beyond my early expectations but our aim remains exactly the same: to ensure that property owners and their tenants and properties are looked after in the best way possible.
Away from business, I love mountain climbing. I enjoy keeping fit with running and yoga but mountain climbing challenges me to really push my limits. I also relish working with people in a team situation. Although it’s very different to business, it has parallels. I have set myself the challenge of climbing the ‘seven summits’. At this point, it’s six down, one to go.
