One of the central suburbs of Newcastle, Hamilton is an area known for its multiculturalism and heritage areas. Bordering on Newcastle West, Hamilton is a little more than three kilometres from Newcastle’s CBD.
Established in 1871, Hamilton has always been known for its variety of shops and eateries. Even in the 1920s there were more than 400 retail outlets in Hamilton alone. One of the most popular spots in Hamilton is Beaumont Street. The “main drag” stretches for about a kilometre and is full of boutique shops, casual cafés and modern bars.

Hamilton has one main primary school, Hamilton Public, with Hamilton North Public and Hamilton South Public in surrounding suburbs. All three schools feed into Newcastle High, which despite its name is located within the Hamilton South suburb. Other schools in the area include St Francis Xavier’s College, a senior Catholic high school catering for students in Year 11 and Year 12.
