A GUIDE TO HELP YOU IN YOUR SEARCH FOR A PLACE TO LIVE, OR INVEST, IN NEWCASTLE, LAKE MACQUARIE OR MAITLAND
Thanks to its proximity to the University of Newcastle, Jesmond is Newcastle’s largest multicultural hub and caters to both students and the elderly.
Jesmond is a relatively small suburb, part of the City of Newcastle and covering just over 1,200 hectares of land. Its closest neighbours are North Lambton, Wallsend, Birmingham Gardens and Callaghan. Jesmond is about nine kilometres from the Newcastle CBD.
Jesmond was originally an agricultural area and it still produces avocados. It was originally called Dark Creek and known for its orchards and sawmills. The area was established in the early 1880s and started with around 600 residents – now there are over 10,800. It is believed the area is named after Jesmond, near the English town of Newcastle upon Tyne.
“Students of the university make up much of Jesmond’s population and thanks to UoN’s massive international cohort, the area is largely multicultural.”

Jesmond has a large shopping village owned by Stockland. The shopping centre has two major supermarkets and a department store. Located near busy Newcastle Road, Jesmond Park is a spacious parkland with bushwalks, two play equipment areas and a large oval with a cricket pitch. The flower beds make it a popular spot for wedding photographs, while the entertainment options such as basketball courts and the disc golf course allow families to spend the whole day playing at the park.
There are two primary schools in the area: Heaton Public School and Jesmond Public School. The Jesmond campus of Callaghan College teaches Year 11 and 12. While its cohort is predominantly made up of students who have come through its Waratah Campus, Callaghan College attracts enrolments from a multitude of schools who want focused Year 11 and 12 classes.
Jesmond offers a lot of townhouses and units due to its large student population, although you will still find many detached houses in the outer streets.
