New Lambton is bordered by Lambton to the north, Broadmeadow to the east, Kotara to the south and Rankin Park to the west. It is part of the City of Newcastle, sits about six kilometres from the Newcastle CBD and is within easy reach of several train stations. Blackbutt Nature Reserve takes up about a third of the suburb.

A popular spot for locals, Regent Street offers a combination of independent stores and chain franchises. There are multiple butchers, bakeries, a supermarket and a pizza restaurant all nestled among award-winning cafes and boutique clothing stores. Although hidden away, Orchardtown Road is another New Lambton street that draws plenty of customers.

The John Hunter Hospital is Newcastle’s largest hospital and only children’s hospital, and is located in New Lambton. Being one of the biggest hospitals in NSW outside of Sydney, patients from regional and rural northern NSW are often flown to John Hunter for treatment. It contains the only trauma centre in NSW outside of Sydney and is also used as a teaching hospital for students from the University of Newcastle. Part of John Hunter’s children’s facilities is the Fairy Garden, which offers young patients the chance to play outside in a calm and relaxing area. The model has been copied by Lampang Hospital in Northern Thailand.
Blackbutt Reserve is a popular picnic spot for locals. The 182-hectare nature reserve is home to many native species. The reserve has bird and animal enclosures where visitors can see local wildlife up-close. Its most popular exhibit, the koala enclosure, offers the chance for visitors to pat and feed the koalas. Blackbutt Parkrun is held each Saturday morning, following a five-kilometre track within the reserve.
New Lambton has several schools including one infants school (Kindergarten to Year 2), New Lambton Heights Infants School and three primary schools: New Lambton Public, New Lambton South Public and St Therese’s Primary School.
