A guide to help you in your search for a place to live, or invest, in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie or Maitland

Close to the New England Highway south-east of Maitland lies the suburb of Thornton.

Thornton is part of the City of Maitland and while it is a reasonably large suburb, it has a low population density. It sits between Beresfield and East Maitland on the Hunter train line, making it easy to travel into Newcastle and Sydney or further out into the Hunter Valley.

Thornton train station opened in 1871, encouraging residents into the area. It was relocated to its current site in 1913. As industrial estates were developed in the area, more residents and business moved into the suburb.

Why rent in Thornton?

Thornton Shopping Centre provides the bulk of Thornton’s shopping experience. Along with necessities such as a supermarket, butcher, bakery and post office, the centre also has several beauty salons and casual eateries. The centre is also the home of many health services, with a medical centre, pathology laboratory, dental practice and chiropractor within the building.

Not far from the shopping centre is Thornton Public School, the only school in the suburb.

Thornton has undergone a slight market growth in the last 10 years, meaning there are many newer properties in the area. Many of these are family-sized homes, with some townhouses in the suburb.
